About the Exhibition

Solo exhibition of Dutch contemporary photographer Erwin Olaf. The show will feature the artists’ latest series Skin Deep, Berlin, Tamed & Anger and Keyholes.

The exhibition features Erwin Olaf’s latest series Tamed & Anger, Skin Deep, Berlin and Keyhole. In Tamed & Anger, the artist exposes himself, with spittle on his lips and bulging eyes, raging at the 7 January 2015 Paris terrorist attacks. Faced with the eternal question of what an artist can do after the shock of such events, Erwin Olaf responds with art, i.e. the sensitive embodiment of his contradictory feelings. In Skin Deep, he shows the colorfulness of human kind and the beauty of the diversity of the human body. Focus on beautiful shapes in carefully directed light and stylish backgrounds binds these images together into more classical traditions of the nude in art. In the series Keyhole (already in the collection of the Museum voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem, The Netherlands and the Samsung Children’s Museum, Seoul, South Korea) Erwin Olaf balances on the thin line between intimacy, shame and feelings of guilt. In Berlin, the artist Uses historically important settings to shows children and (young) adults in a transcendent relation with each other.

About the Artist

Erwin Olaf

Contemporary photographer, Art Statements

Mixing photojournalism with studio photography, Dutch-born Erwin Olaf emerged on the international art scene in 1988, when his series Chessmen was awarded the first prize in the Young European Photographer Competition. This award was followed by an exhibition at the Ludwig Museum in Cologne, Germany in the same year. Erwin Olaf’s art implicitly visualises the unspoken, the overlooked, that which typically resists easy documentation. Olaf’s trademark is to address social issues, taboos, and bourgeois conventions within the framework of a highly stylised and cunning mode of imagery. By providing scenic and striking design, along with the utmost perfect composition in his typical, immaculate “OWN” style, combined with his passion for conceiving flawless scenarios, he vividly captures the essence of contemporary life.

About Art Statements

Art Statements was founded by Dominique Perregaux in October 2003 in Hong Kong. The gallery has since become an important establishment that represents in Asia internationally celebrated contemporary artists . Pursuing its goal of giving its artists a wide visibility and to reach a pan-Asian audience, Art Statements opened its first overseas branch in Tokyo in October 2010. Beside its regular exhibition programme, the gallery is actively involved in dealing both Western and Chinese Modern and Contemporary Art as well as participating in international art fairs. Art Statements works also extensively with regional architects, interior designers and property developers in public art consultancy projects.
