About the talk

Sigrid Ivo will give an explanation on the origin of the collection and the museum. The Museum of Bags en Purses Hendrikje (Tassenmuseum Hendrikje in Dutch) is a unique museum that exhibits the history of the (ladies)bag in Western culture from the end of the Middle Ages to the present (including the work of contemporary Dutch designers). There is no other museum in the world that is so specialised and deals in such a comprehensive way with this subject. The Museum of Bags en Purses Hendrikje is the only museum in Europe and it is the largest in the world. The collection consists of more than 5,000 bags, pouches, suitcases, purses and other accessories.

Like so many museums the Museum of Bags en Purses originated from a passion to collect.  Thirty five years ago it began as a personal fascination by two collectors and it has grown into an extensive collection and finally to a museum. The museum started twenty years ago as a small private museum with yearly 5,000 visitors. The museum moved in 2006 to the centre of Amsterdam and now welcomes more than 70,000 visitors a year. It is listed in the top 15 of best Dutch museums and was listed in the top 10 leading Fashion Museums of the World. Sigrid will tell you how this private museum, with no government subsidy, earns money as a cultural entrepreneur, with all its challenges.

About the speaker

Sigrid Ivo
Artistic Director of the Museum of Bags and Purses

After having completed her studies in Applied Domestic Sciences, she started her own market research agency which she led for ten years. During that period she also graduated in Art History at Leiden University, specializing in the history of the bag. She grew up surrounded by her mother’s bag collection; Hendrikje Ivo and her husband Heinz were the founders of the Museum of Bags and Purses in 1996. Sigrid has been working for the museum since 1998. First as curator, than from 2006 until 2015 as general director and since 2016 as artistic director. Under her leadership the Museum of Bags and Purses moved from Amstelveen (a city next to Amsterdam) in 2006 to a historical building in the centre of Amsterdam. The museum was completely refurbished and reopened in June 2007. The museum welcomes yearly more than  70,000 visitors and the museum organises special temporary exhibitions, like Royal Bags and It’s a Men’s World.

Sigrid is the author of the book ‘Bags’ (2005), a book about the museum’s collection. In 2011 en 2014 new editions of the book Bags were published. As a specialist of the history of (hand) bags she regularly publishes articles and gives lectures about bags and purses and their history.
